[...] In a previous post I expressed support for conservative commetator Ann Coulter’s speaking engagement at IU, and implored those who disagree with her to simply stay away from the venue rather than be disruptive. This is what I did. Sadly, though, as I feared, many Coulter detractors did disrupt the event, and, apparently the controversy continued long after the event ended. It’s probably still going on. [...]

Fair enough, 'speech' is a better term. The word 'lecture' is actually included in IU's press release (linked from the first sentence of the post), and I suspect that's what got the word in my head. It probably represents the academic orientation of the people who produced the press release... Frankly, it probably represents that they use a template for those things, and most of the people whose names get filled in are nerds whose "speeches" are probably more like "lectures", ie, boring to most people. In any event, neither a speech nor a lecture is a debate.

I don't think it's fair writing off Coulter's speech as a 'lecture' (sneer quotes noting subtle pejorative use of the term). From what I've heard, an audience at Cooper Union was no better behaved at the Hitchens and Playthell Benjamin debate.
