The word 'lecture' is actually included in IU's press release (linked from the first sentence of the post), and I suspect that's what got the word in my head. It probably represents the academic orientation of the people who produced the press release... Frankly, it probably represents that they use a template for those things, and most of the people whose names get filled in are nerds whose "speeches" are probably more like "lectures", ie, boring to most people. In any event, neither a speech nor a lecture is a debate. Fair enough, ‘speech’ is a better term. From what I've heard, an audience at Cooper Union was no better behaved at the Hitchens and Playthell Benjamin debate.
